Technician

Dylan Smith

Dylan Smith was a research technician in the lab from 2011 to 2015. While there he helped lead the sampling effort and molecular characterization of soil fungi in pine forests across North America and developed some of the first Illumina protocols for sequencing fungi. After leaving the Peay lab, Dylan worked as lab manager of the Vincent J. Coates Genomic Sequencing Core at the University of California, Berkeley.  Dylan worked on developing and optimizing molecular techniques and sequencing strategies for a variety of genomic assays, including whole genome sequencing, variable RNA expression, targeted amplicon library studies, CRISPR edit/off target validation, and long molecule sequencing.  He now works as a licensed California Wastewater Treatment Operator in Petaluma, where he still enjoys plenty of microscopy time looking at activated sludge fungi (and tons of other cool "bugs").
